Project Prometheus (MOD) – Leconfield Solar Farm

PPS Leconfield Solar Farm

CLIENT: DEFENCE INFRASTRUCTURE ORGANISATION

The first of four solar farms to be installed on Ministry of Defence property was completed in September 2021

The 2.3 MW Leconfield solar farm at the Defence School of Transport near Beverley, East Yorkshire, was the first of four projects being built in partnership with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation.

The next three projects in the scheme are:

  • Duke of Gloucester Barracks near Cirencester for 1.4MW

  • Rocks Barracks in Suffolk for 1.5MW

  • Baker Barracks in Sussex for 1.5MW

PPS, now known as Ethical Power Development, was commissioned to work alongside the Defence Infrastructure Organisation to deliver the solar farms, as part of Project Prometheus, in 2018. We initially completed detailed feasibility analysis for each site before securing viable grid connections and providing consultancy support to achieve planning consent. Once the projects were ready-to-build, we delivered a procurement service to appoint suitable design and build contractors for installation of the solar farms. This procurement service included the use of the our unique New Energy Dynamic Framework which enables Public Sector Organisations to complete complex tendering exercises with access to approved suppliers.

The aim of project Prometheus is to increase renewable energy use within the Ministry of Defence estate. The four pilot sites will result in efficiency savings of £1 million pounds, which will be reinvested into army infrastructure, and will reduce emissions by 2000 tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) per year, with 700 tonnes being saved at Leconfield alone, which will help reach the Army’s target of becoming Net Zero by 2050.

A video about the project can be found here.
